Figs found in Point Loma, CA.,

Jan, 2009

I spotted these fig trees one day in the Point Loma area of San Diego County. I stopped, introduced myself to the home owner and asked about the figs. According to the home owner these 3 trees are from the Island of Madeira, Portugal. Cuttings were brought over in the 50's by her brother-in-law.

The first tree on the left is a long black fig. She said it is a very popular fig in Madeira. She didn't know the name but it may be Abeberiera.

The middle tree is a long-necked large, round green fig. She said its very sweet and is an early and long fruiting tree. Fruit ripens here from June to Nov. This may be a good fig for colder climates due to its early fruiting. She called it Fico Bêbera.

The tree on the right is a round black fig. She called it Fico Pardo.

Estella let me have cuttings from all three trees. I asked to come back this summer to photograph the fruit and leaves and of course do a taste test!

The plants on the ground are also from Portugal. On the left are Fava Beans. On the right is a Portuguese squash and in front is coivas (collards). Mind you, this is January!

Renters finally contacted July, 09. No info on tree but they said it was a "community tree", to help myself to whatever I wanted, fruit or cuttings. Took some summer cuttings and will go back in Aug/Sept for the fruit.
