IQ SIG's

Dyer's swap

At the end of March, 1998 six IQ SIG members exchanged a fat-quarter of fabrics they dyed, painted, discharge dyed, or otherwise created themselves. Included in the exchange were the directions on how each piece was created. Below is a synopsis of these techniques along with an image of the fabrics that were produced. This was a great exchange! The fabrics produced were fantastic. Thank you to all who participated.

Barbara Braun
of Minnesota, used a Shibori technique to discharge dye her fabric. Barbara wrapped and twisted a solid colored fabric around a pole before setting it in a bleaching solution.

Ronnie Brown
of New York, also used a discharge technique. After accordion folding a solid colored fabric, then folding it into triangles, the fabric was clamped and immersed in to a bleaching solution.

Arlinda Parker
of North Carolina, did a gradation of fabric colors using Procion dyes.

Alice Norman
of Idaho, used Procion dyes in several colors. Layering 3 wet pieces of fabric on top of each other, she finger painted the top piece allowing the dye to seep through to the layers below. This produced a watercolor effect.

Wanda Sheldon
of Texas, used a heliographic process with Setacolor transparent paint. After treating the fabric with Setacolor and laying them outside, she laid various leaves on the fabric and let the sunshine do the rest. The fabric darkened where exposed to the sun, imprinting the leaves onto the fabric.

Sue Vanderveen
of California, used Procion dye solution in a baggie. After 24 hours in one color, the fabric was washed well and placed in a different color. After a second washing to remove all excess dye, the damp fabric was placed in Setacolor's Pearlescent paint, adding a shimmer to the fabrics.
